Understand the vocabulary of addition and subtraction.

17 Main Learning Objective
I can show instant recall of addition and subtraction facts. I can practise different mental calculation strategies.

18 or subtract a two-digit
Key idea If you need to add or subtract a two-digit number you can start with either the tens or the units digit.

19 Main Learning Task Today we will be working in threes (trios) and on our own (individuals) in our normal maths groups.

20 Main Learning Task One pupil write down an equation.
The other two copy it and work out the answer. The first pupil looks at both answers and decides which is correct.

21 Main Learning Task If the first pupil decides they are not correct, or if the answers do not agree, all three pupils check the calculations until they agree an answer. They then swap jobs so everyone can choose a sum.

22 Main Learning Task Group 1:- Simplest The starting number is under 50.
Children can add or takeaway a single- digit number.

23 Main Learning Task Group 2:- Middle
The starting range is in the range. Pupils add or subtract a number in the 10 – 20 range.

24 Main Learning Task Group 3:- Hardest The starting number is 150.
Pupils add or subtract a number between 10 and 50.

25 Main Learning Task Solve these questions silently 17 -  = 4
=   - 12 = 12 13 +  = 13 =  30 -  = 21  + 3 = 10 14 +  = 20 20 -  = 11 =  23 -  = 18 =  16 -  = 6 12 – 4 = 

26 Main Learning Task Mark your work while the teacher gives the answers,
17 -  = 4 =   - 12 = 12 13 +  = 13 =  30 -  = 21  + 3 = 10 14 +  = 20 20 -  = 11 =  23 -  = 18 =  16 -  = 6 12 – 4 = 

27 Main Learning Objective
I can show instant recall of addition and subtraction facts. I can practise different mental calculation strategies.

28 Plenary Which pairs of numbers are easy to add?
Which pairs of numbers are not easy to add? Why not?

29 Plenary If the starting number is 50… I want to add 11….
