Sermon Text Genesis 22:1-14

Cover Picture Genesis 22:8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

Cover Picture Three Realities for Abraham Abraham recognized his own sinfulness and his need for salvation Abraham recognized God’s grace in providing the needed sacrifice Abraham believed in God’s ability to raise the dead

Cover Picture I.Abraham recognized his own sinfulness and his need for salvation Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a burnt offering… The implications of this burnt offering The promise of God to Abraham (Abrahamic Covenant – Genesis 12:1-3) involves both death and resurrection. A substitute is needed to die in the place of man

Cover Picture Genesis 15:6 Then [Abraham] believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness… Romans 4:3; Galatians 3:6 James 2:23

Cover Picture Jeremiah 17:9 “the heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Cover Picture Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father's house, to the land which I will show you…”

Cover Picture John 8: “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

Cover Picture II.Abraham recognized God’s grace in providing the sacrifice… God will provide for Himself the lamb (Genesis 22:8). Any sacrifice from the hands of man is grossly inadequate for true and lasting appeasement with God

Cover Picture Isaiah 64:6 For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; and all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

Cover Picture Psalm 14:1b-3 There is no one who does good. The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.

Cover Picture 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.

Cover Picture Like Abraham, we… are dead in our trespasses and sin (Ephesians 2:1); are alienated from God (Colossians 1:21); are enemies of God (Romans 5:10); and, are deserving nothing but God’s wrath (Ephesians 2:3).

Cover Picture 1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.

Cover Picture 1 Peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

Cover Picture Acts 2: "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—23 this Man delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. 24 But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.

Cover Picture Acts 4: "For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.

Cover Picture Galatians 4:4-5 4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

Cover Picture 2 Timothy 1:8-9 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity,

Cover Picture Isaiah 43:11 “I, even I, am the LORD, and there is no savior besides me.”

Cover Picture Isaiah 45: Gather yourselves and come; draw near together, you fugitives of the nations; they have no knowledge, who carry about their wooden idol and pray to a god who cannot save. 21 Declare and set forth your case; indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none except me. 22 Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

Cover Picture Hosea 13:4 Yet I have been the LORD your God since the land of Egypt; and you were not to know any god except me, for there is no savior besides me.

Cover Picture III.Abraham believed in God’s ability to raise the dead… Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” (Genesis 22:5) The offering of Isaac wasn’t a test for God to see if Abraham had faith, but a test for Abraham so that he might see the faith that God had given him.

Cover Picture Hebrews 17:19 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; 18 it was he to whom it was said, “IN ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE CALLED.” 19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.

Cover Picture 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures…

Cover Picture Micah 6:7 Does the LORD take delight in thousands of rams, in ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my firstborn for my rebellious acts, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

Cover Picture John 3:14-15 John 3: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.” John 12: “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” 33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.

Cover Picture Mark 8:31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Cover Picture Romans 1:1-4 the gospel of God...[was] promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord

Cover Picture John 8:56 “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.”

Cover Picture 1 Peter 1:8; John 20:29 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory (1 Peter 1:8); Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed (John 20:29).
