1 Free From Sin, Slaves to Righteousness

2 Hebrews 12:1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

3 Previously Servants of Sin

4 Sin is a form of moral slavery
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. 2 Peter 2:19

5 Sin is a form of moral slavery
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. John 8:32-34

6 Sin is Deceptive and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:10

7 Sin is Deceptive 24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, Hebrews 11:24-25

8 Sin is Deceptive For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

9 Sin is Deceptive 12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.

10 Sin is Deceptive 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. James 1:12-16

11 Sinners are on the road that leads to hell
21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death Romans 6:21 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 6:23

12 The People had now obeyed

13 that “form of doctrine”
They (and we) must obey that “form of doctrine” But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. Romans 6:17

14 that “form of doctrine”
They (and we) must obey that “form of doctrine” 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

15 that “form of doctrine”
They (and we) must obey that “form of doctrine” 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 1 Cor 15:1-3

16 that “form of doctrine”
They (and we) must obey that “form of doctrine” 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,

17 that “form of doctrine”
They (and we) must obey that “form of doctrine” 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. Romans 6:3-6

18 Obedience must come from the heart.
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10

19 There must be a yielding” or submitting to righteousness
Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? Romans 6:16

20 There must be a yielding” or submitting to righteousness
And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

21 Lessons for us today

22 If we do not want to serve God here, we will not enjoy heaven.
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Hebrews 12:28

23 We must have the desire to follow God.
21 What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. Romans 6:21-22

24 Conclusion 1. If man wants to see heaven, you cannot be a slave of sin. 2. Only freeing yourself from sin through obedience to the gospel will allow someone to be right with God and gain heaven as their home.
