Chapter 2 Vocabulary Review

1. Racism The belief that some people are inferior because of their Race; used to justify slavery. 2. Mission Settlements built by the Catholic Church that included a church, a town, and farmlands.

3. Treaty of Tordesillas A 1494 agreement which divided lands between Spain and Portugal. 4. mercantilism Economic system the European nations used to enrich their treasuries by creating a favorable trade balance; emphasized colonies

5. Plantation Large farms that raised cash crops 6. New France first permanent French colony in North America; trading post established at Quebec.

7. Slavery The practice of one person being owned by another; became firmly established in the Americas in order to produce cash crops. 8. Missionaries People sent to convert the native people to Christianity.
