School Health Advisory Council 2016/17

What Is a SHAC? An advisory council for the School Board... That focuses on health related topics. That provide recommendations specific to changes and/or additions to the school’s health education curriculum or instruction the impact the entire school district, not just individual school campuses. That provide advice and can only make recommendations to the school district Board of Trustees. That ensures local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction.

What Is a SHAC? An advisory council for the School Board... That provides advice to the district on coordinated school health (CSH) programming and its impact on student health and learning. Coordinated School Health is a systematic approach of advancing student academic performance by promoting, practicing, and coordinating school health education and services for the benefit and well-being of students in establishing healthy behaviors designed to last a lifetime. What Is a SHAC? A Group appointed by the district consisting of: Parents (Majority) Teachers Community Members District/School Administrators May also include: Students Health Care Professionals Law Enforcement Senior Citizens

What Is a SHAC? The following are requirements of local SHACs per legislation: A parent must serve as a co-chair A minimum of five members must be appointed to serve on the SHAC by Board of Trustees Majority of members must be parents who are not employees of the district SHAC must meet at least 4 times a year SHAC must deliver an annual report to the Board of Trustees SHAC is required to submit recommendations regarding the district's’ health education curriculum

Board Assigned Goals For This Year... Implement stress reducing measures for students and staff that were identified through the committee work. Review studies related to contributors to suicide, identify best practices in suicide prevention, and recommend actions for the District to take. Review findings from concussion research, identify best practices in concussion prevention, identification, and return to play, and recommend any changes to District practices. Since time and resources are limited, the achievement of the stress reducing measures and suicide prevention measures takes the highest priority among the goals listed.
