Chapter 8 Section 4 Oligarchy in Sparta

Can you spot Sparta?

Sparta Sparta is landlocked (not accessible to sea) in the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Sparta had a hybrid government. – Monarchy: 2 kings. King led the army in battle. – Oligarchy: Council of elders (28 members over the age of 60, elected for life). – Democracy: Assembly. 9,000 citizens could recommend laws to council. 5 ephors acted like cops to enforce the law. (they could remove a king who broke the law)

Boys taken from family at age 7 to live in army barracks, and spent 20+ years in the army. Sparta was like a huge army camp. Girls were raised to have strong children. Spartans used iron rods as money. Spartans did NOT value luxury goods or beautiful buildings.

Military Conquests Sparta conquered neighboring Messenia. – Messenians became “helots” (slaves). – Helots were owned by the polis. – Turned over half the food to the Spartans – Forced to wear dogskin cap to show their lowly status – Spartans did NOT have to farm for a living.

The Helot Revolts C. 450 B.C. Spartan crushed a helot revolt. Spartans established a military state. Any helot who caused trouble could be killed without fear of punishment. Helots who protested could be beaten or killed.

Pair Share (Read p. 266) 1.Did Spartan boys your age go to school? 2.How old were they when they married? 3.Until what age did they serve in the army? 4.Did men spend time with their wives? Why?
