Presentation transcript:

What is induction? “Good induction provides a secure foundation for new employees to be effective and to achieve their potential, providing a link to their further professional development” Key elements: ▪An individual programme of professional development and monitoring ▪Assessment against teaching standards (2012).

Statutory induction Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 NQs must complete the ‘Induction period’ DfE Guidance Who does Induction apply to? The Teaching Standards 2012.

The right teaching post It should : involve teaching the same classes involve similar planning, teaching & assessment processes to other teachers in substantive posts in your school 10% remission for NQ activities and a further 10% of the 90% for PPA It should not : demand you to teach outside of your areas present you with unreasonable day-to-day discipline issues involve additional non- teaching responsibilities

Getting a job in an Academy or Free School How is it different? ▪You are not employed by an LA but by the school itself. The sponsor’s ideas are part of the school. ▪The contract may be different to standard teacher’s pay and conditions. ▪Academies and free schools are not bound by the National Curriculum (but are still accountable to OFSTED). How might this affect you? ▪The teaching week could be longer. ▪You may be required to carry out additional non teaching responsibilities (even as an NQT). ▪You may have more freedom in what and how you teach. ▪There may be more monitoring from external agencies. ▪Traditional school structures may not apply.
