Tools to protect your children – Parental Control Every parental control package is different, but most provide services such as: Filtering –restrict access to particular sites, such as pornographic websites. Time limits – restrict the amount of time your child can be online, or set periods of time where your child can access certain sites. Monitoring – where you are informed of certain sites that your child is attempting to gain access to. Reporting – where you are provided with information about what sites your child has used. Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation6V01 03/15

Reach an agreement A good way to set boundaries is to reach an agreement with your child. The agreement list what the child can and can’t do online. Here are some examples of the areas you might want to discuss: Limits on the amount of time your child spends online, or playing computer games. Having regular screen breaks – at least five minutes every minutes. Not sharing any pictures they wouldn’t be happy to share with you. continued… Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation7V01 03/15

Reach an agreement - continued More examples of the areas you might want to discuss with your child: Not sharing any pictures they wouldn’t be happy sharing with you. Not giving out personal detail, such as mobile phone number and address without parents permission/knowledge. Coming to you if they are concerned. Or, if not, knowing where they can go for independent help and support. Why not introduce an agreement after watching on of the Think U Know films? V01 03/15Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation8

Let them teach you The people who know best about what your children are up to online - are your children! Get them to tell you about the sites they are using. Ask questions such as: Why do you like the site? What can they do on it? What’s so fun about it? Who uses it at school? Who can you talk to? Who are their friends on it? This is a good way to develop trusting relationships with your child about what they are up to online. Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation9V01 03/15

Tools to protect your children – further support Look at Has someone acted inappropriately towards you on line, or to a child or young person you know? It may be sexual chat, being asked to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or someone being insistent on meeting up. You can report it to CEOP. Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation10V01 03/15

Resources to support you We are going to watch this clip so you get a taster of the videos that Think U Know offer as resource to support teachers and parents. Watch Hector and his friends learning how to use their computers safely! Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation11V01 03/15

Tools to protect your children - Think U Know Watch the Think U Know films together at:- to-the-movies to-the-movies Your child may have watched one of our Think U Know cartoons or films at school. They are a great way to start conversations with you child about what can happen on line and what they can do about it. Ask your child if they have seen any of the films. Why not sit down and watch one together and discuss the topics. We would recommend that you watch the film on your own beforehand so that you are aware of the topics it covers. Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation12V01 03/15

E-Safety (Messages) Your children may have their own mobile phone, account or social network page. So it is important they know what to do when things go wrong: 1.Do not delete the message 2.Don’t shown the message to other children 3.Go to an adult to tell them, not a friend 4.Do not respond to any messages Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation13V01 03/15

What are we doing in school? Members of staff have been trained to understand e-safety and its implications. We have a progressive e-safety training for the children. Staff meetings on e-safety. A risk assessment for children using devices in school is being compiled. School policy has been developed. A guidance sheet for adults in school has been created so that they know what to do if a situation occurs. When devices in school are used reinforcement of rules and advise are re- visited. We will continue to deliver the safest environment for your children to engage with the internet and all the benefits it brings. Chollerton C. of E. Aided First School - e-Safety Presentation14V01 03/15

What next? There is an opportunity to look at some of the websites that we use in school that can be used at home. They have sections dedicated to parent support. Talk to members of staff about e-safety and any issues that you would like clarification on. Remember that e-safety won’t stop here. We will continue to deliver the safest environment for you children to engage with the internet and all the benefits it brings. Chollerton C. of E.
