Tools to protect your children – Parental Control Every parental control package is different, but most provide services such as: Filtering –restrict access to particular sites, such as pornographic websites. Time limits – restrict the amount of time your child can be online, or set periods of time where your child can access certain sites. Monitoring – where you are informed of certain sites that your child is attempting to gain access to. Reporting – where you are provided with information about what sites your child has used. Reach an agreement A good way to set boundaries is to reach an agreement with your child. The agreement list what the child can and can’t do online. Here are some examples of the areas you might want to discuss: Limits on the amount of time your child spends online, or playing computer games. Let them teach you The people who know best about what your children are up to online - are your children! Get them to tell you about the sites they are using. Ask questions such as: Why do you like the site? What can they do on it? What’s so fun about it? Who uses it at school? Who can you talk to? Who are their friends on it? Tools to protect your children – further support Look at Has someone acted inappropriately towards you on line, or to a child or young person you know? Tools to protect your children - Think U Know Watch the Think U Know films together at:- to-the-movies to-the-movies Your child may have watched one of our Think U Know cartoons or films at school. They are a great way to start conversations with you child about what can happen on line and what they can do about it. Ask your child if they have seen any of the films. Why not sit down and watch one together and discuss the topics. We would recommend that you watch the film on your own beforehand so that you are aware of the topics it covers. Chollerton C. of E. What are we doing in school? Members of staff have been trained to understand e-safety and its implications. We have a progressive e-safety training for the children. Staff meetings on e-safety. A risk assessment for children using devices in school is being compiled. School policy has been developed. A guidance sheet for adults in school has been created so that they know what to do if a situation occurs. When devices in school are used reinforcement of rules and advise are re- visited. We will continue to deliver the safest environment for your children to engage with the internet and all the benefits it brings. Chollerton C. of E. What next? There is an opportunity to look at some of the websites that we use in school that can be used at home. They have sections dedicated to parent support. Talk to members of staff about e-safety and any issues that you would like clarification on. Remember that e-safety won’t stop here.
