Why do we need to be ‘E-safe’? E-safety Video www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/Primary/Co nversation-Starters/Go-to-the- movies/Jigsaw/ Discuss with the person next to you what the main messages are ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

Our Responsibility Help students learn to function in the world outside the classroom. Teach them how to recognise risk and to provide them with strategies for dealing with problems if and when they arise. ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

Common Misconceptions All children are experts when it comes to using the internet. ‘I am not equipped to help’. Applying filtering, parental controls, antivirus etc makes children safe. What happens outside of school has nothing to do with school. ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

What you can do… Talk to your child about who they are talking to. Understand and guide your child’s online behaviour – negotiating and establishing boundaries. Familiarising yourself with any programmes or websites they use. ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

What you can do… Ask your child if they know how to block or report someone who they do not want to talk to. Using parental control software (provided by internet service provider, mobile phone network, online content provider or games console) and consider using filtering options, monitor and set up time limits for access to chat…but do not forget these do not block or flag up everything! ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

There are three important questions which your child needs to be able to answer confidently: 1. If you felt uncomfortable about anything you saw, or if anybody asked you for personal details such as your address on the internet would you know where to go for help? 2. If anybody sent you hurtful messages on the internet or on your mobile phone would you know who to tell? ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

There are three important questions which your child needs to be able to answer confidently: 3. Can you tell me one of the rules your school has for using the internet? (For example, never share your password, always use Google Safesearch, always ask a teacher before you access the internet, never give out personal information, do not use chat rooms and only use a website directed by the teacher) ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

Other aspects of E-Safety Cyberbullying When someone uses the internet to bully someone else. If any child finds themselves a victim of cyberbullying they need to follow these simple rules: 1. Do not respond to the bully. 2. Block content with the bully. 3. Save relevant communication, such as texts, emails or webpages. 4. Tell a trusted adult. ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

Other aspects of E-Safety Cyberbullying In cyberbullying, bystanders may be just as culpable as others if they pass on images designed to humiliate, for example, or by taking part in discussion groups. Their involvement compounds the misery for the person targeted. There are 4 statute laws and 1 Scottish law that are relevant to the use of IT in relation to bullying. ‘ High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’

Exploitation ‘High quality learning and caring together in an encouraging Christian environment.’ Children can be directly reached through games, advertisements and brand pages on social networking sites.
