Risk Behaviors Are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. It’s important to recognize that you can control most risk behaviors What are some Risk Behaviors that put health at risk? Lesson Home

The CDC has identified 6 risk behaviors that account for most of the deaths & disability among young people under age 24. Tobacco Use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity Alcohol & drug use Sexual behaviors that may result in HIV infection, other sexually transmitted diseases, and unintended pregnancies Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence Lesson Home

Main Idea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) You can take action to reduce your exposure to health risks. Avoiding high-risk behaviors and choosing friends who do so is one of the best ways to achieve & maintain wellness. Lesson Home

Facts from the 2011 YRBS Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) Approximately 48% of teens did not participate in vigorous physical activity three or more days per week. 90% of teens avoid the risk behavior of riding in a car without a safety belt. Approximately 63% of teens did not use alcohol Lesson Home

How to Avoid or Reduce Risks You can protect your health & minimize the possibility of risk by practicing health behaviors. Taking steps to keep something from happening and getting worse= Prevention One of the most effective strategies for protecting your health is practicing Abstinence. Abstinence: is a deliberate decision to avoid high risk behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of tobacco, alcohol and drug use. Lesson Home
