Coral Reefs By Martha Calie

Coral Is a mix of plant and animal life. Originated millions of years ago.

However, not all coral becomes a coral reef.

A good environment for coral: Lots of light Salty water Low nutrients levels Shallow water Moving water

Life at a coral reef is almost as diverse as in a tropical rainforest.

The Great Barrier Reef is off the coast of Australia. World’s largest barrier reef system Larger than Great Britain Composed of over 2900 individual reefs

The Great Barrier Reef is a combination of barrier reef, fringing reef, and more… A barrier reef occurs offshore separated from the mainland. A fringing reef continues from a land mass.

Threats to the Great Barrier Reef Crown of Thorns Starfish Bleaching due to rising water temperatures

Coral Reefs are essential As habitats for marine life As protective barriers for shore lines As unique geologic formations.
