1 Happy Tuesday! – 11/8 Which of the following is a shallow zone in a freshwater habitat where light reaches the bottom and nurtures plants?  A Benthic zone B Eutrophic zone C Littoral zone D Limnetic zone

2 Marine Ecosystems Chapter 7: Section 2

3 Coastal Wetlands Covered by salt water for all or part of the time
Provide habitat or nesting areas for many fish and wildlife Absorb excess rain (protects areas from flooding)

4 Coastal Wetlands Filter out pollutants and sediments
Provide recreational areas for boating and fishing

5 Estuaries An area where fresh water from a river mixes with salt water from the ocean As two bodies of water meet, currents form and cause mineral-rich mud and other nutrients fall to the bottom.

6 Estuaries The estuary becomes a nutrient trap.
These nutrients become available to producers, and marsh grass begins to grow in shallows.

7 Estuaries Estuaries are very productive ecosystems because they constantly receive fresh nutrients from the river and the ocean. The surrounding land protects estuaries from the harsh force of ocean waves.

8 Plants and Animals of Estuaries
Estuaries support many marine organisms because they receive plenty of sunlight for photosynthesis and plenty of nutrients for plants and animals. Lots of plankton found here and provide food for larger animals.

9 Plants and Animals of Estuaries
Organisms that live in estuaries are able to tolerate variations in salinity because the salt content of the water varies so much. Many of the world’s major ports and some of the largest urban areas are built on estuaries.

10 Threats to Estuaries Often used as places to dump waste
Can be filled with pollutants: Sewage Industrial waste containing toxic chemicals Agricultural runoff of soil containing pesticides and fertilizers

11 Salt Marshes Found of Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Coast
Salt marshes develop in estuaries where rivers deposit their load of mineral-rich mud. Support a community of clams, fish, and aquatic birds Nursery for shrimps, crabs, and fishes

12 Mangrove Swamps Located along coastal areas of tropical and subtropical zones Mangrove trees grow partly submerged in warm, shallow, and protected salt water of mangrove swamps. Provide breeding and feeding grounds from about 2000 animals species.

13 Rocky and Sandy Shores Rocky shores have more plants and animals than sandy shores do. Rocks provide anchorage for seaweed and site from animals to live.

14 Rocky and Sandy Shores Sandy shores dry out when tide goes out, and many tiny organisms live between the sand grains and eat plankton. Barrier Islands typically run parallel to shore and help protect the mainland and coastal wetlands.

15 Happy Wednesday! – 11/9 Mangrove trees grow A along riverbanks.
B in freshwater wetlands. C in tropical areas and in subtropical areas. D in the benthic zones of lakes.

16 Coral Reefs Coral reefs are limestone ridges built by tiny coral animals called coral polyps. Coral polyps secrete skeletons of limestone (calcium carbonate), which slowly accumulate and form coral reefs. Thousands of species live in coral reefs making it among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth.

17 Coral Reefs Corals live only in clear and warm salt water where there is enough light for photosynthesis. Corals use stinging tentacles to capture small animals that float or swim to the reef.

18 Disappearing Coral Reefs
An estimated 27% of the coral reefs in the world are in danger of destruction from human activities. Corals are sensitive to water temperature, water clarity, and nutrients levels. Overfishing, oil spills, sewage, pesticide, and silt runoff damage corals.

19 Oceans Sunlight penetrates only about 100 m into the ocean before all the sunlight is absorbed. Much of ocean’s life is concentrated in the shallow, coastal waters.

20 Plants and Animals of Oceans
In open ocean, phytoplankton grow only in areas where there is enough light and nutrients. The open ocean is one of the least productive of all ecosystems.

21 Plants and Animals of Oceans
The depths of the ocean are perpetually dark, so most food at the ocean floor consists of dead organisms that fall from the surface. Decomposers, filter feeders, and the organisms that eat them live in the deep areas of the ocean.

22 Threats to the Oceans Although oceans are huge, they are steadily becoming more polluted. Most ocean pollution arises from activities on land.

23 Threats to the Oceans Overfishing and certain fishing methods are also destroying some fish populations.

24 Arctic and Antarctic Ecosystems
Arctic ecosystems depend on marine ecosystems because nearly all the food comes from the ocean. Arctic and Antarctic Oceans are rich in nutrients from surrounding landmasses and supports large populations of plankton. Plankton  Fish  Birds, Whales, Seals
