Background: Seva Mandir Founded in 1968 with an extensive education promoting for promoting primary education since 1991 The work of the organization spans over 626 villages, around 70,000 households, distributed across five blocks – Badgaon, Kotra, Girva, Kherwara, and Jhadol Key strategic organizational objectives: To create and strengthen institutions for development To enhance people’s capabilities for self-development To create sustainable improvements in the livelihoods base AfE-SV supports education program in Badgaon block since 2007

Seva Mandir Education Program Seva Mandir Education Program has its roots in Lok Jumbish movement Lok Jumbish - education for all - movement started in 1989 aimed at ensuring education for all in the state of Rajasthan through community mobilization with three primary objectives Universal Primary Education Universal retention of children up-to 14 years, and Improvement in quality of education to enable essential levels of learning Shiksha Kendra (NFE Centers) for promotion of primary education Non-Formal-Education centers in villages across Udaipur/Rajsamand district to bring literacy to first generation learners with community partnership Evolved directly out of Lok Jumbish movement Seasonal Residential Learning Schools for tribal children Full-time Immersive, seasonal residential school evolved out of extensive research in tribal and migratory regions of southern Rajasthan

Seva Mandir Education Program [2] Activity Centers (Sahayog Kendras) Capacity building initiative with the government schools Support Center to improve learning and introduce activity based learning Improve attendance, retention, and comprehension amongst children attending government schools Improving overall quality of education and in-part community trust in the government schools Action Research Project with MIT-PAL Measure, and in part develop, intrinsic motivation of teachers Reduce teacher absenteeism through use of camera and other intervention techniques Make children and parents participate in improving quality of education in school

Seva Mandir Education Program [3] Jan Shikshan Niliyams or Village Libraries Community powered, often mobile, libraries in villages to bring education and general awareness to doorstep … Uurja Ghar – Youth Resource Centers Targeted intervention focused at rural youth of age to who are losing their affinity with the village Equipping the youth to meet the challenges of the changing world Forum for constructive recreation as well as building and acquiring useful skills and knowledge

Seva Mandir Project Summary AfE-SV Seva Mandir works in 79 tribal village under Badgaon block, and covers three Panchayat Samitis of Udaipur and Rajsamand Migration of adolescents to cities and town is a major school dropout contributor Education Program is present in 21 villages, and (NFE Center Program) is recognized under RTE by the Govt. of Rajasthan as a legitimate and necessary intervention Between July 2014-June 2015: 20 Non-Formal-Education Centers have reached 616 children 25 children from Badgaon block attended two residential learning camps Five Activity Centers reach 837 students in Government middle and high schools

Seva Mandir – Mid Year Progress Update Shiksha Kendra 172 NFE Centers/Shiksha Kendras reaching a total of 6400 children 138 SKs have single teacher 30 have 2 teachers, and 4 have 3 instructors 22 SKs reaching ~660 children supported by AfE-SV, and have 2 teachers on average 31% new enrollments, up from 29% in Total new girl child enrollment averages 43% Highest was in Girva 47% Kotra block is lowest with 38% Total girl child attendance averages 52% Evaluations were conducted in May 2015 and November 2015 respectively In mid-year evaluation, 84% children appeared a

Seva Mandir – Mid Year Progress Update Shiksha Kendra Evaluations Evaluations were conducted in May 2015 and November 2015 respectively May % (5095) children appeared, 44% were girls, 34% have reached level-3 November % (5389) children appeared, 43% girls, and 34% children were at level children were in both evaluations and overall level-3 attainment is 41% AfE-SV supported SKs have 39% level-3 attainment overall

Seva Mandir – Mid Year Progress Update Shiksha Kendra Evaluations 1156 (19%) children enrolled in Government schools (Grade 5/6) 305 children from AfE-SV supported SKs enrolled into Government Schools In Jhadol, 62% children were enrolled into government schools, highest in last 5 years Sample survey of 66 cohorts (32 boys and 34 girls) was conducted to assess retention in education. Chidren who passed between are still studying 1 completed college 10 stopped after 12 th 10 stopped after 10 th 13 dropped between 8 th and 10 th No data was available for 4 children Overall 74% students graduated in last 10 years have completed secondary school or beyond

Seva Mandir – Mid Year Progress Update Shiksha Kendra Evaluations Annual Teacher Training 3 rounds focused on multi-level teaching Divided into English, Hindi and Maths linked to learning level of children World Teacher Exchange Program with Edukans 4 th year of teacher exchange program SKs are monitored throguh camera monitoring intervention On average SKs open 24 days a month, 92% out of 26/27 working days Optional shiksha shuks (fee) collection was at 8,89,800 (98% of total projected) Students/parents are recommended to pay Rs 150/year for attending SKs

Seva Mandir – Mid Year Progress Update Residential Camps 3 learning camps Kaya village 297 total unique children participated (131 boys and 166 girls) 186 children were first time learners 111 children were dropouts 44% children wre engaged in farming related activity 13% engaged in domestic work 14% children were engaged in paid labor 29% don’t attend schools due to some domectic conflict/issues/challenges

Seva Mandir – Mid Year Progress Update Activity Centers 5 Activity Centers, co-located in government schools supported by AfE-SV 797 children between grade 1-8 benefit from Activity Centers 9 full-time instructors work in 5 activity centers
