W.E.D. Vocabulary RocksSoil Geologic History

This is how weathering can lead to erosion and the formation of soil & sediment.

What is it breaks rocks down into smaller pieces which can then be carried by erosion.

This is a landform that would result from deposition following wind erosion.

What is a sand dune.

Lichens growing on rock & producing weak acid that wears away rocks is an example of this type of weathering.

What is Chemical Weathering.

Waves, wind, water & glacier movement are examples of this (these) agents of change.

What are erosion & deposition.

This is the process that drops sediment off in a new location.

What is deposition.

This is the series of process on the surface and inside Earth that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another.

What is the rock cycle.

This is the process that presses sediments together.

What is compaction.

This is the matter from living and dead plants, animals, bacteria & fungi that makes up part of the soil.

What is organic material.

These are factors such as climate and availability of resources which have changed over time.

What are environmental conditions.

This describes the the way that rocks are stacked with oldest rocks and fossils in the deepest layers and youngest, most recent fossils and rocks near the top.

What are rock layers.

This is the rock type that forms when sediments are pressed and cemented together.

What is sedimentary rock.

This is the rock type that is formed deep underground from heat & pressure.

What is metamorphic rock.

This is the main action that will result in igneous rock forming.

What is volcanic action.

This is the process when particles of sediment dry and stick together.

What is cementation.

This is how sedimentary rock could become igneous rock.

What is undergoing heat & pressure, becoming m.r. then melting & cooling to become i.r.

Plant matter or animal waste represent which component of soil.

What is decomposed organic matter.

This is the order in which particles would settle in the bottom of a jar (first to last).

What is sand, silt then clay.

Sandy soil is composed of loose grains that are said to be this size.

What are large.

Minerals, clay, silt & sand make up this part of soil.

What is weather- eroded rock.

These are the 4 main ingredients in soil.

What are weather eroded rock, organic material, water & air.

This is the layer where the oldest rocks and fossils could be found.

What is layer L.

This is the earth process that occurred in the image below.

What is mountain building.

Scientists could conclude this about a mountainous area where a fish fossil was found.

What is the area used to be covered by water.

This is the Earth Process responsible for earth’s layers becoming exposed for scientists to observe.

What is erosion.

This is how scientists describe the change of organisms over time.

What is from simple to complex.

Final Jeopardy Round Please make your wagers.

This conclusion could be made from observations of this picture.
