Presentation on theme: "Review Types of Rocks Sedimentary Rock"— Presentation transcript:

1 SC.7.E.6.2 Identify the patterns within the rock cycle and relate them to surface events.

2 Review Types of Rocks Sedimentary Rock
Rock that forms when particles from other rocks are pressed and cemented together. Describe how the rocks look like in the picture.

3 Review Types of Rocks Metamorphic Rocks
A type of rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. Describe how the rock looks like in the picture.

4 Review Types of Rocks Igneous Rocks
A type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock at or below the surface. Describe how the rocks look like in the picture.

5 What is the Rock Cycle? The rock cycle is a series of processes on the surface and inside of Earth that slowly changes rock from one kind to another. Describe the rock cycle in your own words.

7 Pathways of the Rock Cycle
Forces deep inside Earth and at the surface produce a slow cycle that builds, destroys, and changes the rocks in the crust. The rock cycle is a series of processes that occur on Earth’s surface and in the crust and mantle that slowly change rocks from one kind to another. There are many pathways by which rocks move through the rock cycle. Through melting, erosion, weathering, deposition, and heat and pressure, the rock cycle constantly changes rocks from one type into another type.

8 Surface Events Weathering, erosion, and deposition of rock on Earth’s surface can lead to the formation of sedimentary rock. Explain how weathering, erosion, and deposition create sedimentary rock.

9 Quick Review – What is weathering?
The chemical and physical processes that break down rock. What are some examples of how weathering occurs? Explain each: Freezing and thawing Plant Roots Acid

10 Quick Review – What is erosion?
The process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves weathered particles of rock and soil. What are some examples of how erosion occurs? Explain each: Rain Glaciers Waves Wind

11 Subsurface Events Recall that tectonic plates move as the result of convection currents in the mantle. Explain this concept in your own words.

12 Subsurface Events But what does the rock cycle have to do with plate tectonics?

13 Subsurface Events Examples of how plate tectonics influences the rock cycle: Colliding plates can fold and bend upward causing rock to push upward causing mountains. Draw a picture of what is happening. These mountains can be broken down and continue through the rock cycle.

14 Subsurface Events Examples of how plate tectonics influences the rock cycle: Earthquakes can also occur along plate boundaries exposing new rock to continue through the rock cycle. Explain this using the rock cycle.

15 Subsurface Events Examples of how plate tectonics influences the rock cycle: Colliding plates can also produce volcanoes which produce new igneous rock. Explain.

16 Subsurface Events Examples of how plate tectonics influence the rock cycle: Colliding plates produce great heat and pressure which can change one type of rock into another creating metamorphic rock. Explain.

20 Answer 1. Earth’s rock is continually cycling through different states and locations. The diagram below shows the rock cycle. The labels for two processes are missing. Which of these processes in the rock cycle could be happening at the stage labeled 2? Folding and mountain building c. Compaction and cementation of weathered sediments Changes due to heat and pressure * d. Subduction of an oceanic plate beneath a continental plate 2. Explain how all 3 types of rocks can become metamorphic rock. ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ 3. How are wreathing and erosion and essential part of the rock cycle?
