Revising Population Aims: 1.To learn the key concepts of population change and migration. 2.To improve exam technique.

Match the key terms with definitions Population density Crude birth rate Life expectancy Infant mortality Pull factors Outward migration Demographic transition model A model showing changes in birth and death rates over time. Also shows total population growth. Factors that encourage people to an area. The average number of years a person is expected to live. The number of people per square kilometre. The number of live births per 1000 people per year. People move away from an area. The number of babies that die per 1000 live births before there 1 st birthday.

Describe the trends shown by the graph. (4 marks) Have you: Used figures? Calculated the difference between 2000 and 2050? Calculated the difference between the over 60’s and over 80’s? Commented on the trend?

Describe the pattern shown by the world map showing population density (4 marks)

Its time to celebrate if you have the following in your answer: The world’s population is unevenly distributed. In the north of Canada, and northern Europe including Russia and Finland the population is under 1/km 2. Other areas of low population density are Australia and central South America. Areas of high population density with over 100 people per km 2 are situated in western Europe such as England and Germany, in India and South East China. Areas with people per km2 are on the east coast of the USA and Thailand and Indonesia. Many areas which are densely populated are in a coastal location compared to sparsely populated areas which tend to be inland.

Read the following exam questions. For each question choose an appropriate casestudy and list 5 key bullet points which you would include in your answer. 1)Over population can cause many problems including overcrowding explain how countries have dealt with this problem. 2)High birth rates occur for a variety of reasons, explain why some countries experience high birth rates. 3)Migration can lead to positive and negative effects. With reference to examples explain the problems caused by migration. 4)A decline in birth rates has lead to many MEDCs looking at an ageing population; describe and explain the problems associated with an ageing population.

Peer assess the following answer. With reference to examples explain why the distribution of the world’s population is uneven. (6 marks) The world’s population distribution is uneven for a number of reasons. Physical factors such as relief, climiate and resources all impact. Some areas of the world are far to cold for people to live in and some are too hot such as the Sahara desert. Eonomic factors such as a good range of industry and road links means that lots of people would live there. The Artic is too cold for people to live in. Citys will have lots of people there because of all the jobs, housing and entertainment available.

Look again at the exam answer and correct and improve the following:  Use of key geographical terms.  Spelling, punctuation and grammar.  Use of examples.  Physical factors that would affect population distribution.  Human factors that would affect population distribution.  Level of explanation through the use of connectives.
