AIMS  What are SATs?  What do they test?  What are the tests like?  How are the children prepared?  What will happen in the week of SATs?  What do the results mean?  When will the results come out?

What are SATs?  Statutory Assessment Tasks  End of Key Stage 2  All children tested at the same time  This is the first year without ‘levels’

What do they test? Maths  Arithmetic  Reasoning skills English  Reading  SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) Writing composition is assessed by the teacher.

Timetable 11 th – 14 th May 2015 DateTest Mon 9th May 2016English – Reading Test (60 mins) Tues 10th May 2016 English – Grammar, Punctuation (45 minutes) & Spelling Test (approx. 15 minutes) Wed 11th May 2016 Maths – Paper 1 Arithmetic (30 minutes) Paper 2 Reasoning (40 minutes) Thurs 12th May 2016Maths – Paper 3 – Reasoning (40 minutes)

What are the tests like in English? Reading test (60 minutes). Now takes the form of 3 non- themed, individual tests.  Spelling test (approx. 15 mins). 20 spellings/ marks.  SPaG test (45 mins). 50 marks. The above are added together to give a SPaG score (out of 70). Over the next few weeks, several writing samples (per child) will be collected and assessed by the teacher to give a writing level. Handwriting is assessed within this.

 The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.  There will be a selection of question types, including:  Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’  Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’  Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’  Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’  Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

 The grammar, punctuation and spelling test will consist of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.  The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions:  Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’  Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

What are the tests like in mathematics?  Arithmetic test – 30 minutes (40 marks)  Reasoning 1 – 40 minutes (35 marks)  Reasoning 2 – 40 minutes (35 marks) No calculator or tracing paper

How are the children prepared?  Learning throughout school  Revision/ booster groups  Practice questions and papers

Where do the SATs take place?  The children will be grouped and will either be in 2E, 2F, the red corridor booths or the staff room.  Some children will have readers and they will already know who they are.  In the SPaG and maths tests any child can put up their hand to have a question read to them by an adult.

If you want to help...  Support internet revision – BBC bitesize, MyMaths, apps  Buy maths revision guides through school and work on them together.  Support homework – especially reading/ spellings and maths  Early nights and lots of encouragement!  Please avoid holidays or absences between now and SATs week.

What will happen during the week of SATs?  Tests taken according to timetable  Mornings  Breakfast! Monday to Thursday.  Everyone as happy as can be before we start  Support for children  External monitoring of test procedures and invigilation - ‘SATs police’!  Afternoon free choice  Fun and celebration

What do the results mean? Each pupil registered for the tests will receive:  a raw score (number of raw marks awarded)  a scaled score (a converted score)  confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard  Teacher assessment (based on teacher knowledge of child) given along with test result.  Show progress of child from KS1 to KS2  Show how well school is doing  TAs and results go to secondary schools to inform their planning for year 7.

When and how will results be reported?  Tests externally marked  Sent back to schools in July  Checked in school (e.g. scores add up)  Appeals/ numbers crunched  Parents receive an end of year written report with both SATs results and TAs
