Presentation transcript:

Year 6 SATS 9 th May 2016 Miss Shuker ‘Everyone matters, every day counts’ Results Results come back to school in July and will be reported to you and the children once we have checked and agreed them. Pupils will receive separate test results for Spelling, Punctuation & Spelling, Reading and Maths. The government says the average 11 year old should achieve a scale score of 100 to be “expected”. A scaled score less than 100 is below national expectations and a scaled score above 100 is above expectations. How parents can help Encourage your son/daughter to complete homework and revision. Ensure your son/daughter is in bed and asleep at an appropriate time before the tests. Tired children cannot think clearly. Ensure your son/daughter is at school on time. Ensure your son/daughter has something to eat before they come to school. Test days Children may bring in the following things, if they wish, to make them more comfortable during the tests: Cushion Water bottle—with safety cap Small lucky charm/favourite item Small amount of sweets—not chocolate The children have been working very hard in their booster sessions since January therefore, your child is very familiar with the format and instructions for all of the papers which should alleviate some of the pressures of these important days. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have concerns. Thank you for all your support Miss E Shuker (Y6 class teacher/Assistant Head teacher)

Year 6 SATs—Mon 9th - Thursday 12th May I would just like to remind you that your son/daughter will be taking their compulsory Statutory Assessment Test (SAT) papers in Maths and English on Monday 9th – Thursday 12th May As a school, we are committed to the all- round education of your son/daughter to prepare them for the high school and later life, but are also obliged to complete the national tests. Timetable Children can only take tests on the specified dates. Tests will start at 9am so please ensure your child is in school at 8.50am prompt, as any late arrivals may cause problems. Reading Test (1 hour) The reading booklet will contain three extracts with different types of questions. The children are given one hour to read all texts and answer the questions. They will be allowed to use the reading booklet throughout the test. There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’ Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SpAG) (1 hour) Pupils in Year 6 will take the new grammar, punctuation and spelling test. This consists of two papers. Paper 1: short answer questions contains: Multiple-choice answers - tick, draw lines to, or put a circle around answers. Short answers: some questions have a line or box for your answer. A word, phrase or sentence should be recorded. Paper 1 will last for 45 minutes Paper 2: spelling contains: 20 short sentences. A single word has been missed out of each sentence. Children hear each word three times. The section should take you approximately 15 minutes to complete. Marks from both papers then give an overall result for SpAG Writing For the fourth year now, there will be no writing test. Children will be assessed from the worked they have produced in school from all areas of the curriculum (Topic, Science and RE.) Children gain a separate teacher assessment for this. Maths tests Maths Paper 1 – Arithmetic — Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. They will have 30 minutes to complete this paper Maths Paper 1 – Reasoning —40 minutes Maths Paper 2 – Reasoning —40 minutes Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including: Multiple choice True or false Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem Marks from all 3 tests then give an overall result for Maths.
