Welcome to Class 1 !

Settling in Year 1… Your children are learning; -new routines -to work independently -to work individually, in pairs and in groups

Mathematics Maths equips pupils with a powerful tool to understand the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in more abstract ways. Maths is important in everyday life.

Numeracy In Year 1 During year 1 your child will develop their knowledge and understanding of maths through practical activities, exploration and discussion. They will be provided with opportunities to read, write and order numbers as well as develop a range of mental calculation strategies. This work all builds upon pupils prior experience of maths based on the early learning goals.

Mathematics Number Shape, Space and Measure Problem solving/reasoning Taught through; daily maths lessons topic work daily routine

Maths Lessons Now that your children are of statutory school age, they will be expected to cover aspects of the National Curriculum within their Maths lessons. These lessons consist of a mental starter where games/chants and the interactive whiteboard are used to develop quick recall skills. Main Activity: where certain new concepts are introduced or past ones reinforced. Plenary: children are assessed on their understanding of concepts introduced in main activity and misconceptions can be addressed.

Number Tracks Children’s early experiences of calculations begin with using actual objects for counting. They then develop to using number tracks where numbers are placed along a grid.

Number Lines The children then develop to using a number line. Number lines help children to develop mental images of the numbers in order. These are based on the idea of using a number to measure a distance along a ruler. A point is labelled 0 and then steps of equal length are marked out. Children are able to see clearly that 10 lies at a greater distance from 0 than 4.

Number Lines Number lines can also be used to show the difference between 2 numbers.

Number Fans These are used to help us assess children’s understanding of number recognition and addition and subtraction. E.g. show me one more than 3, show me which number goes with 2 to make 10.

Bead Strings These are used to aid counting on and back in 1’s and 10’s. To find a particular number such as 13.(helps with partitioning into tens and ones) To explore number bonds. They are also the next step towards using empty number lines.

Maths Expectations There is now a high emphasis on children being able to talk and explain what the numbers in the calculation represent, ensuring a deeper understanding of the concepts behind the Maths and not just the procedure, which will then lead to mastery. Consistently, Competently and Confidently
