St John Fisher Primary School Mathematics Workshop 24 th February 2016 On your table you will find: Example SATs questions: Please have a go. What strategies would you use to answer these questions? Calculation Policy and Typical Learner pages Paper and pencils to use throughout the evening. Feedback forms

Mathematics Workshop – Feb 2016 Welcome!

Mathematics Workshop – Feb 2016 Timetable Welcome Introduction presentation Workshops Close

Mathematics Workshop – Feb 2016 Aim of the Evening Explain what we teach. Explain how we teach. Opportunities for you to try out the methods for yourself and ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask, others will be wondering too! Help give you ideas to help support your child in their mathematical progression. To be enjoyable!

Mathematics Workshop – Feb 2016 New Curriculum The new curriculum has been statutory for all year groups, except Y2 and Y6 since September 2014. (It is statutory for Y2 and Y6 now). It goes further than the old curriculum - some aspects that were once in the secondary school domain have now moved down to primary schools. Children are now expected to master certain skills earlier than they have done before - many goalposts have moved. The programme of study is now set out in a year by year basis. Each year group working from an agreed set of Age Related Expectations (ARE). (See typical learner pages)

Mathematics Workshop – Feb 2016 The main changes in Mathematics  Huge overarching emphasis on NUMBER FLUENCY and the ABILITY TO REASON.  5 yr olds now expected to learn to count up to 100 (compared to 20 in old curriculum) and learn number bonds to 20 (was 10).  Simple fractions will now be taught from KS1 and by the end of KS2 children are expected to be able to convert decimal fractions to simple fractions e.g. 0.375 = 3/8.

 By 9, children are expected to KNOW times tables up to 12 x 12 (was up to 10 x 10 by the end of KS2)  To encourage greater use of mental arithmetic and develop number fluency, calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2.  More emphasis on calculating and problem solving with fractions and decimals and less on data handling (now statistics).

The Mastery Curriculum You MASTER a skill before you move on to something more difficult, and you do this earlier than you did before. When you are competent with a skill you do not move on to the next year group’s curriculum. You develop your MASTERY of it; your understanding of this concept through working with it in depth and in different forms. With the ultimate aim of Embedding learning with depth and enabling children to work with fluency between different areas of maths….and life!
