(A) Lacrimal gland homogenates prepared from control (C) and IL-1–treated animals were processed for Western blotting using an antibody against phosphorylated Smad1/5/8 or against β-actin (to control for gel loading). Data in the plot are mean ± SEM from three independent experiments. *Statistically significant difference from control. (B) Lacrimal glands removed from saline- and IL-1–treated animals were processed for immunofluorescence studies using the antibody against phosphorylated Smad1/5/8. (C) Lacrimal glands removed from IL-1–treated (3-day) animals were processed for double-immunofluorescence studies using anti-nestin (green) or anti-phosphorylated Smad1/5/8 (red).
