1 From: Mechanisms of Murine Lacrimal Gland Repair after Experimentally Induced Inflammation
Invest. Ophthalmol. Vis. Sci ;49(10): doi: /iovs Figure Legend: Involvement of autophagic cell death in IL-1–induced injury of the lacrimal gland. Lacrimal glands from saline- and IL-1–injected (3-day) animals were processed for transmission electron microscopy. (A) Normal ultrastructure of a control lacrimal gland. Acinar cells are highly polarized with basally located nuclei (N); they have a very dense, rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) network and normal mitochondria (M), and the cytoplasm is filled with secretory granule (SG) located toward the apical area. ECM, extracellular matrix. (B–D) Ultrastructure of IL-1–injected lacrimal glands. Most of the acinar cells have lost their polarity, the RER network is disorganized (D), and the cytoplasm is filled with vacuoles (V), some of which are double-membrane delimited (B, inset).
