Curriculum Night 8 th Grade Mathematics

Materials Students must bring the following to class on a daily basis.  Textbook  Pencils (sharpened before class begins)  Colored pens for grading  2 Spirals devoted only to math  1 ½” binder  Loose leaf paper  Calculator  Graph paper  Daily planner/assignment notebook  Positive attitude

Resources available in text book:  Interactive Real-World Video: Introduces the lesson and connects the concept to real world situations  Math On the Spot: This allows the students to get instruction from one of the main writers of the textbook using a QR scanner.  Animated Math: Students will be able to explore different key concepts and see how the math actually works.  Personal Math Trainer: Students have the ability to go through different math problems that correspond to the lesson they are completing. A tutor is available to help the students through each of the problems, giving hints as needed.

 Unit 1: Real Numbers, Exponents, and Scientific Notation  Unit 2: Proportional and Non-proportional Relationships and Functions  Unit 3: Solving Equations and System of Equations  Unit 4: Transformational Geometry  Unit 5: Measurement Geometry  Unit 6: Statistics Concepts to be Covered:

On-line Component  This book series comes with an amazing on-line component at my.hrw.com  Each student has been given their own login and password. It works for math, science, and reading textbooks this year.  Textbook available online in case they forget it at school.  Students will be completing homework assignments and submitting them online.

Submitting Assessments Online Students will be given a code to use while submitting assessments on mathsbestfriend.com./summithill.

Resources at School:  Mrs. Blevins- Before or after school by appt. After school everyday until 2:40. Wed/Thurs after school I can stay longer.  Academic Assistance – M-F from 2:25-3:25 Student needs a ride home or able to walk.

 Doing homework is essential to learning mathematical concepts. It gives students the opportunity to work independently, as well as reinforce and extend previously learned skills.  Homework may be assigned daily.  All work must be shown in a vertical format.  Failure to complete daily assignments will be result in a pink sheet. Three pink sheets within a quarter will result in an afterschool detention.  If your child is absent from class, it is their responsibility to get the notes and complete the missing work. Homework:

Assessments: I cannot stress the importance of homework in this class. Homework is practice in preparation for upcoming assessments. If a student fails to complete assignments, they may struggle with these assessments. Students will be responsible for grading their own assignments. It is important that they are honest when checking their work and to ask questions when necessary. Once again, failure to do so may result in students struggling with the assessments. All homework and classwork will be kept in a three-ring binder, separating each module with a subject divider. Students are NOT allowed to throw these assignments out until they are directed to do so. NO EXCEPTIONS

Web Site: Students and parents may access my web site through the district at This site will have updated information about classes as well as daily assignments on my homework page. Also available on this site are links to the available resources of the textbook. In addition, I included useful websites that will help students that are not understanding a concept. Some of these sites have videos that will also reinforce concepts.

Contact Information: You may contact me via at or at between the times 7:30-7:40am 12:00-12:45pm 2:20-2:40pm (The best way to contact me and get a quick response will be by )

I am looking forward to having your child be successful in math this year!
