Request for Proposals for Deep Space Travel SkyView Astronomy 2016
Interplanetary and deep space travel Request for Proposals for Interplanetary Travel One unit test grade Group project Must cover all 5 areas – One group member per area – Group decision about assignments within group Oral presentations (March 16) Options – Written report – PowerPoint
How can space be useful?
Why not go straight to Mars?
What capabilities do we need?
Dealing with zero gravity
International Space Station as a resource
LaGrange points
Near Earth Asteroids
Resources on NEA?
Objectives 3/4/16 Create a group Google document (Google slides) – Share with Mr. Smith – Assign a slide to each sub-category – Begin fleshing out your proposal steps – Due today Finish and write out your category goals (focus on the “what” not the how when writing these). – For example: Will create a mining system that will provide raw materials for the creation of human habitats suitable for life on lunar colonies, Mars and vessels traveling to the stars. – Due today Determine your mission stages and timeline. – Pre-Mars – Mars – Star travel – Use the “Voyages” file from NASA to help frame these Begin looking at budgets for necessary parts of your project
Proposal Steps Write your goals Determine the stages necessary to reach your goals Write your timeline Determine what materials and budget you will need to accomplish your goals Modify previous steps as needed
Horrifying scenarios: have you accounted for them? Epidemics among the crew Bone loss in 0 gravity (1.5% per month) Population biology: 50 members of a species are needed to form a viable population Micrometeors Solar flares Gamma bursts; cosmic rays – – to-protect-astronauts-from-space-radiation-on-mars to-protect-astronauts-from-space-radiation-on-mars
Terraforming? Can Mars be transformed into a habitable planet? CO2 and chloroflorocarbons reintroduced into the atmosphere to create a heat-trapping atmosphere. Lack of magnetism on the planet allows atmospheric molecules to be stripped away by solar wind (charged particles escaping the sun and sweeping through the solar system like wind).
Budgets Capital expenditures – Outposts and life support systems – Equipment Supplies – Rockets – Fuel – Food Personnel – Training – Health – Retirement Revenue streams – More government money – Private sector – International cooperation
