Warm-Up If you do not have a math notebook yet, you can do these problems on any piece of paper. You need a math notebook by Monday! 1)Order from least to greatest: 2) What is the absolute value of -3 ? 3) Evaluate. If you can you do this in your head, do you know what Property of Math you just used?

SNOWBALL INTEGERS On a piece of scratch paper, write one integer from -20 to 20. Write it big so it fills up the whole paper! Everyone get up, and stand around the perimeter of the classroom. When I say GO! Crumble up your paper and throw it across the room. (Really!) Pick up ONE “Snowball” and wait for my next instructions. Now, put yourselves in order from smallest to largest!

–5 –4 –3 –2 – Absolute value: The distance from 0 on a number line. Evaluate|–4| This means “The absolute value of –4” 4 units 4 units |–4| = 4 |4| = 4 Review: Absolute Value Remember: Absolute value is always positive! Why? Because distance is always positive!

Standard NS1.2 Add integers

Adding Integers “Pre-Test” In your notes, take a few minutes to solve these problems. #14 + (-6) #2-3 + (-6) #3-6 + (-3) # # #69 + (-3)

“Pre-Test” Answers #14 + (-6) #2-3 + (-6) #3-6 + (-3) # # #69 + (-3) = -2 = -9 = -1 = 4 = 6

4 + (–6) Answer: So, 4 + (–6) = –2. From there, move 6 units left. Move 4 units to the right. Start at zero. Ex. 1

–3 + (–6) Answer: So, –6 + (–3) = –9. From there, move 6 units left to show –6. Move 3 units left to show –3. Start at 0. Ex. 2

–6 + (–3) Use a number line. Answer: So, –6 + (–3) = –9. From there, move 3 units left to show –3. Move 6 units left to show –6. Start at 0. Ex. 3

–5 + 4 Answer: So, –5 + 4 = –1. Use a number line. Then move 4 units right. Move 5 units left. Start at 0. Ex. 4

Find – Answer: So, –5 + 9 = 4. From there, move 9 units right. Move 5 units to left. Start at zero. Ex. 5

9 + –3 Step 1: Start at zero. Answer: 6 Step 2: Move right nine. Step 3: Move left 3. Where do you end? Ex. 6

Just watch, don’t copy… 8 + (–7) Answer: So, 8 + (–7) = 1. Use a number line. Then move 7 units left. Move 8 units right. Start at zero.

Don’t copy, just watch… –8 + (–4) From there, move 4 units left. Answer: So, –8 + (–4) = –12. Move 8 units to the left. Start at zero.

5 + (–5) Step 1: Start at zero. Answer: The sum is 0. Step 2: Move right five. Step 3: Move left five. Where do you end? Don’t copy, just watch…

–5 + (–5) Step 1: Start at zero. Answer: –10 Step 2: Move left five. Step 3: Move left five. Where do you end? Don’t copy, just watch…
