1 Adding Integer Rules Using our experience with the chip model and number lines to add integers.

2 If the signs are the same, pretend the signs aren’t there
If the signs are the same, pretend the signs aren’t there. Add the numbers and then put the sign in front of your answer. Rule #1 Examples: 9+5= 14 −9+ −5 = −14

3 Use rule #1 to solve these problems:
-8 Use rule #1 to solve these problems: -3 + (-5) = 4 + 7 = 3 + 4 = -6 + (-7) = 5 + 9 = -9 + (-9) = 11 7 -13 14 -18

4 In symbols: |7| = 7 and |-7| = 7
Absolute Value The absolute value of a number is the distance between that number and zero on a number line. Absolute value is shown by placing two vertical bars around the number In symbols: |7| = 7 and |-7| = 7 -7 +7 -5 5 10 -10

5 More Absolute Value Symbols: |2| = the absolute value of 2
Absolute Value: The distance a number is from zero on the number line. More Absolute Value Symbols: |2| = the absolute value of 2 Start at 0, count the jumps to 2. It takes two jumps from 0 to 2. |2| = 2

6 You try: 1. 6 2. −14 =6 3. −20 =14 =20 Find the Absolute Values:
1. 6 2. −14 3. −20 REMEMBER: Absolute value is ALWAYS positive because we are measuring distance. =6 =14 =20

7 If the signs are different pretend the signs aren’t there
If the signs are different pretend the signs aren’t there. Subtract the smaller from the larger one and put the sign of the larger absolute value in front of your answer. Rule #2 4 = - Subtract: 9 - 5 =4 Larger absolute Value

8 Use rule #2 to solve these problems:
5 – 3 = 2 -2 3+ (-5) = = 3+ (-4) = -6+ 7 = 5+ (-9) = -9+ 9 = Use rule #2 to solve these problems: 3 7 – 4 = 3 4 – 3 =1 -1 7 – 6 = 1 1 -4 9 – 5 = 4 9 – 9 = 0

9 Review Same Sign – Add absolute values. Give answer with the sign that they have. Different Signs – Subtract lesser absolute value from greater absolute value. Give answer the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.
