A Short (hehe) History of Napoleon.

How did Napoleon gain power? The French government (the Directory) lost the support of the people. Napoleon was a popular general who won victories against France’s enemies. Napoleon took part in a coup d’etat. Napoleon’s people took over the government.

How did Napoleon strengthen the government? He created new schools and appointed new government officials. He reorganized France’s finances by establishing a national banking system and reorganizing the tax system.

Napoleon Restored Catholicism in France He restored the Catholic Church. This made him more popular among the people and with the Pope.

The Napoleonic Code It was a uniform set of laws that eliminated injustices. These laws meant that all people would be equal before the law. Napoleon wanted to promote people who deserved it.

How did Napoleon go against some Enlightenment ideas? He limited freedom of speech and freedom of the press. He also crowned himself emperor of France.

The emperor needed an empire. Napoleonic Wars Napoleon wanted an empire that stretched across Europe. His empire eventually included parts of Germany and Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Napoleon was defeated. The people of other nations did not want to be ruled by Napoleon. They fought against him. Britain and Russia made an alliance to defeat France. Napoleon attempted to invade Russia. Russia is very cold during the winter…

Napoleon’s Grand Army was defeated.

Napoleon was exiled. He was sent to Elba.

Then Napoleon returned.

Emperor Again Napoleon took power from King Louis XVIII. Once again, Napoleon wanted to conquer Europe.

Defeated Again Napoleon’s army was defeated at Waterloo in Belgium.

Exiled Again He was sent to Saint Helena.

The Congress of Vienna European leaders met to try to keep one nation from conquering other European nations. They also rejected the idea of individual rights.

The Congress of Vienna They blamed Napoleon’s dictatorship on a failed experiment with democracy. They decided to restore royal families to seats of power.
