Ivan Pavlov was born in Central Russia His family wanted him to be a priest, instead pursued science Got his doctoral degree in 1897 from University of St. Petersburg Began research on digestion and blood circulation He became famous from digestive research Won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1904 He was inspired by the ideas of Charles Darwin and I.M Sechenov, the father of Russian Physiology

CONTRIBUTIONS His research on physiology led to the development of the 1st experimental model of learning. Discovery of classical conditioning. Most of his research was studying salivating dogs.

The symbol is a dog salivating over food. The dogs conditioned response of salivating to the sound of the metronome. After repeating this procedure several times, Pavlov was able to remove the food and by only ringing the bell the dogs would salivate. The sounds were a buzzer, the flash of a light, a touch on the dogs harness and the use of different pitches of a whistle, which the dogs had to differentiate between to determine which pitch resulted in access food.
