Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRC) East of England The Fellowship The CLAHRC Fellowship is aimed at clinicians, health and social care practitioners, and managers, who would like to: work at the interface of research and practice develop an understanding of the research environment develop skills in research methodology, service redesign and change management.

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRC) East of England CLAHRC Aims To increase capacity for applied health research and evidence- based practice into the NHS and social care. To foster a culture of collaboration and develop enduring links between the academic and service delivery sectors to facilitate research translation and inform health policy. To embed design principles and research-led innovation into the NHS and social care culture. To improve patient outcomes locally and across the wider NHS.

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRC) East of England Health policy Health policy guides choices e.g. –about which technologies to develop and use –which drugs will be available –how to organise health services In the 1990’s Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) advocated the greater use of research evidence into clinical policy and practice. In particular the use of systematic reviews of RCTs. Evidence-based policy – policy where research evidence is given greater weight in shaping policy. Evidence-informed policy – integrates experience, judgement and expertise with the best available evidence from systematic research.

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRC) East of England Knowledge transfer or knowledge translation ‘Linkage and exchange’ model of health research transfer developed by Jonathan Lomas through the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. (Denis and Lomas 2003). Uses ‘cross-boundary’ techniques to grow the research literacy of decision-makers, enhance the utility of research and increase the likelihood that knowledge from research will be successfully transferred and translated into appropriate action. Crucial to this is the role of the ‘Knowledge Broker’ or ‘Boundary Spanner’ whose activities span the boundaries of different organisations in the worlds of research, and policy and management.

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRC) East of England CLAHRC Fellows 2016 is our 6 th cohort of CLAHRC fellows 12 people from 7 organisations across the region were offered fellowships in a highly competitive field 69 Fellows have been appointed in total since 2011 Recruitment – we look for: –An interest in improving the quality of healthcare services. –Any quality initiatives undertaken in the past. –Good communication skills and an ability to lead service change. –How would the project benefit patients, the Fellow and the Fellow’s organisation?

Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care (CLAHRC) East of England CLAHRC Fellowship 1.Taught component: Research methodology, change management and systems theory. 2.Action learning set: Learning from experience and sharing that experience with others 3.Research project: –a specific project chosen by the fellow or he/she can contribute to a project within one of the CLAHRC East of England themes. –a project of the applicant’s choice however it must fit within one of the CLAHRC themes.
