How did the lives of women change in the 1920s?

Women did a lot of work to help during the war, the number of working women increased by 25 per cent. In 1920 women were given the right to vote, this allowed them to feel a part of society and become more independent. Women were unable to smoke in public- this was looked down upon, however, men were allowed and nothing would have been said. Women acted as housewives, they would be expected to clean the house and look after the children for their husband. Women had traditional views, such as believing in sex after marriage. Women filled in many jobs of men whilst the men were fighting away at war, this began to make them more independent. 8 million were in paid occupations. Although women were not paid as much as men. The role of women in the early 20s

Women could spend more time going out rather than sweeping every part of the house, due to the vacuum cleaner becoming more efficient at the start of At the start of the 30’s 8 per cent of households owned a fridge. More women had proper jobs such as being a secretary. A lot of women became more liberal- they believed they were more free, they could smoke in public and had more sexual freedom due to cars. 98 per cent of households had a vacuum in the late twenties. Role of women in the late 1920s

Fashion in the early 1920’s Women were expected to act modestly. The average Victorian look consisted of a dull coloured ankle dress and corsets as well as their hair tied back tightly. Women were flattening their busts and hips and unbinding their waists, which gave them a long, slim line. In 1924 after an issue of vogue that influenced women, dress waistlines fell, starting out at about the natural line at the beginning of the '20s and dropping to around the hips just a bit later in the decade.

Coordinated and accessorised outfits were a major part of women's fashioned. Unique, elegant style. Short dresses with stockings and hats. Bright coloured outfits rather than dark and dull. People no longer wore corsets which abled them to have more freedom. A range of dress sizes were introduced which made it easier for women to shop. Fashion in the late 1920’s

The flapper image was glamorous and rebellious. Outfits were straight-up-and-down. In order to be a flapper, a woman had to have a lot of money and free time to play the part. College girls, unmarried girls living at home, and independent office workers most frequently presented themselves as flappers. However, the average woman did wear the fashions made popular by flappers Flapper style of dress was best suited to young, thin women. The new physical ideal was the flapper with no waistline, and as minimal a bust and bum as you could manage. In Hollywood, flapper style was embodied by actress Clara Bow, who was also known as "The It Girl." She got jobs and was on her own. As well as flat chests and bare legs, flappers would tend to have short hair. Many flappers scandalized their parents by cutting their hair as high as their ears, often dyed and waved into curls and accessorized with large, accessorised headbands. Flappers wore makeup, which was also scandalous, because, previously, cosmetics had been reserved for actresses. The lipstick was often applied to achieve the fashionable look which was often called a rosebud pout. Flappers would even put on their lipstick in public! Flappers
