The effects of the war Women struggling to get the vote (suffrage) Women had fully supported the war effort and expected something in return Had lower wages than men 19 th amendment to the US constitution gave women the vote and became law on the 18 th August 1918 Men returning from the war got their jobs back – most women only worked until they were married

4. Flappers Many young women became independent from men – called flappers Wore silk stockings Short dresses Shod most of their underwear Work hair in a bob Smoked and drank Worked beside men Went to clubs and racecourses
