2 Aims of the lesson By the end of this lesson you will Understand how the role of women in the USA changed during the 1920s Describe the reasons for this change Evaluate the impact and importance of these changes

3 The effects of the war Women struggling to get the vote (suffrage) Women had fully supported the war effort and expected something in return Had lower wages than men 19 th amendment to the US constitution gave women the vote and became law on the 18 th August 1918 Men returning from the war got their jobs back – most women only worked until they were married

4 Flappers Many young women became independent from men – called flappers Wore silk stockings Short dresses Shod most of their underwear Work hair in a bob Smoked and drank Worked beside men Went to clubs and racecourses

5 Flappers – part two Most wanted sexual equality with men – did not conform with the image of women as daughters and mothers Many flappers married eventually and changed their behaviour Many took advantage of new household gadgets to save on time and some continued to work But for most women in America little changed
