Narcotics What are they? What effect do they have? Examples?

Narcotics and Opioids

Narcotics (in moderate doses) * dulls the senses * relieves pain * Relaxes * induces profound sleep Narcotics (in excessive doses) * causes stupor, coma, or convulsions

Depressants What are they? What effect do they have? Examples?

Depressants are “downers” * Slow brain function * Slowed pulse and breathing * Lowered blood pressure * Confusion * Fatigue * Dizziness * Slurred speech * Sluggishness * Disorientation, lack of coordination

Stimulants What are they? What effect do they have? Examples?

Stimulants are “uppers” * Stimulants enhance the effects of dopamine and other “feel good” chemicals * Increased alertness * Suppress appetite

E-CIGARETTES * Contain nicotine * Long-term effects are unknown * While their intended purpose is to help people quit, they may actually cause addiction * Deaths have occurred from: * Ingesting liquid * Liquid being absorbed through skin * Battery malfunction/explosion * E-cigs have been banned in Singapore & Brazil

Hallucinogens What are they? What effect do they have? Examples?

** As a marijuana concentrate, dabs are considered to be the ‘crack’ of pot.** For the first time, it seems possible to “overdose” on cannabis.

DRUGGED DRIVING Driving Under the Influence of Any Drug

* Why is this a problem? BECAUSE PEOPLE DON’T THINK IT’S A PROBLEM! * Inexperienced drivers + drugged driving = fatal accidents * A study done in 2009 found that 18% of drivers killed in an accident tested positive for at least one drug * Let’s say you are under the influence of a drug/alcohol and you get in an accident that wasn’t your fault – you can still be screened for drug/alcohol use and YOU could be held responsible
