Les pronoms de sujet (Subject pronouns) je = Inous = we tu = you (familiar) vous = you (formal singular and plural) il = he, itils = they (at least one male) elle = she, itelles = they (100% female) on = one

ÊTRE (to be) je suis (I am) nous sommes (we are) tu es (you are) vous êtes (you are, you all are) il est (he is / it is) ils/elles sont (they are) elle est (she is / it is) on est (one is)

Être is an unconjugated verb that means to be. Unconjugated verbs are also known as infinitives.

We can use être to describe people and things. Je suis étudiant. I’m a student. Je suis français. I’m French. Je suis de Paris. I’m from Paris. Le livre est intéressant. The book is interesting.

C’est and il/elle est We use c’est or it’s plural form, ce sont, plus a noun or name to identify something or someone. C’est un ordinateur. It’s a computer. C’est Anne. It’s Anne. Ce sont des documents. They’re documents.

We use il est, elle est, ils sont and elles sont to describe someone or something already identified. C’est un ordinateur. Il est moderne. It’s a computer. It’s modern. Ce sont mes amis. Ils sont intelligents. They’re my friends. They’re intelligent.
