1 Qui, Que, ce qui, ce que, dont, ce dont
Les Pronoms Relatifs Qui, Que, ce qui, ce que, dont, ce dont

2 Relative Pronouns A relative pronoun (“who,” “which,” or “that”) joins a main clause to a dependent clause. This pronoun introduces the dependent clause that describes someone or something mentioned in the main clause. The person or thing the pronoun refers to is called the antecedent. A relative clause may serve as a subject, a direct object, or an object of a preposition.

3 Le role du pronom relatif
The relative pronoun serves to join two clauses (sentences) and create one. The relative pronoun introduces a clause that serves to modify a noun that is the subject or object of the clause that it modifies.

4 Qui ou Que? Qui Que Serves as the subject of the clause and may
be a person or thing. Ex. La fille qui se marie est ma cousine. Que Serves as the direct object of the clause and may be a person or thing. Given that “que” is the Direct object and may preceed a past participle, Then it must agree in gender and number. Ex. La baque que tu as reçue pour tes fiançailles est très belle.

5 Ce qui et Ce que When a relative pronoun is used with no preceeding noun or antecedent, ce qui is used when the phrase refers to the subject and ce que is used when referring to the object. Ex. Un grand mariage est ce que je veux plus tard. Ce que je veux est un grand marriage. Notice in this sentence that the relative pronoun is preceeded by a verb which is not an antecedent. As-tu vu ce qui s’est passé? Ce qui me surprend c’est l’amour!

6 Entraînez-vous! Traduisez! My cousin is a child that never cries.
Here is the invitation that I just received. Look at the pictures that I took of the wedding. I don’t understand what you are saying! What I will tell you is a secret.

7 Pronom Relatif Dont “Dont” is used to link two clauses that would otherwise use the preposition “DE” and an object in a sentence. This is true with verbs followed by “de” and posessive clauses. Ex. Le mariage dont je me souviens était romantique.

8 Ce dont When the relative pronoun “dont” is not preceeded by an antecedent, it must also use “ce dont” Ex. Ces fleurs sont ce dont elle a besoin pour ses noces.
