Friday, August 12, 2016 Homework and Important Dates: Independent Reading Selection– by Monday, August 15, 2016 Homework for Parents– due Monday, August 15, 2016 Warm-Up: Turn in any syllabi, inventories, letters, etc. that you still owe me to the class tray. Update agenda and pick up your notebook. (I have not been able to cover all of them yet, so be careful when picking them up.) Record today’s journal topic on your table of contents: “Free Choice Friday” Do not start writing yet. We will talk about what can be included in “Free Choice Friday” first and then you will have plenty of time to write. Journal Table of Contents DateTitlePage 8/10/16What Would You Change?1 8/11/16 So Far…? 8/12/16Free Choice Friday ?

“Free Choice Friday” Journaling Skip a line after your last journal entry, then write “Free Choice Friday” and today’s date (8/12/16). You are allowed to turn to the next clean page in your notebook if you’d rather do that. Make sure you have the correct page number listed on your table of contents. If you don’t have a notebook yet, use notebook paper & KEEP all journal entries in a special section in your binder. On Free Choice Fridays, you write whatever you wish, as long as it is school appropriate. (Examples: your plans for the weekend; something that’s on your mind; a poem; a fictional story; a list; song lyrics; a good memory; etc.) The “big rule”– DO NOT STOP WRITING UNTIL TIME IS CALLED! P.S. NEVER tear pages out of your notebook. Friday, August 12, 2016

Author’s Chair During Author’s Chair, we give our FULL attention to the speaker. I know it is tempting to turn and talk as you react to what is being shared, but that will take away from the time we have to share. I want everyone to be able to share when they want to, so it is important that we not waste time. Sharing is optional! Friday, August 12, 2016

Learning Target: I will review the basic parts of speech. Today’s Agenda: Journal #3 Phrases and Clauses Pre-Assessment Parts of Speech Review Free Choice Friday

Friday, August 12, 2016 Phrases and Clauses Pre-Assessment While several of these items will be things you are unfamiliar with, please do your best. Try not to guess, because if you happen to guess correctly, I won’t know that you don’t know the information.

Friday, August 12, 2016 Parts of Speech Review Let’s take about five minutes to make sure everyone has the correct information on their organizer. Make sure this is secured on page 1 in the Resource Section of your ELA notebook.

Friday, August 12, 2016 Homework for Parents It is so important to me that we work together as a team and know each other well! In order to start that off, I have a homework assignment for YOU! In 1,000 words or less, write a letter that introduces your child to me. I get to know the “student” side of your child, but I know that there is much more to him/her. Please know that I am only reading it for content – I am not concerned with grammar or spelling, and it can be in any language! This assignment can be turned in as soon as it’s finished, but is due on Monday, August 15, Letters may be sent in with your student or ed to the teacher. Even though there is a “due date,” I will accept these letters at any time during the year! Due: Monday, August 15 th, 2016

Friday, August 12, 2016 Independent Reading Selection You will need to have a book with you at all times during 7 th grade. These books will be used in both your reading class and your language arts class. You are free to choose whatever book you like for reading. You will have a Reading Performance Task due at the end of the first six weeks. We will go over the requirements for your project on Monday, but I wanted you to be aware that there will be a project coming up. Due: Monday, August 15 th, 2016
