Definition Allusion: a reference to a person, place, or event May be used in literature and pop-culture Usually clearly presented, but its meaning can be understood only if the person, place, or event is well known by the reader

Purpose Need to be able to recognize allusions in the books because they are usually important in our overall understanding of the text May provide additional insight to theme, characters, values etc. Link literature to the outside world
