ARTES 3 ESA MULTIMEDIA PROGRAMME

The cornerstones of ESA support to industry Develop applications and involve a variety user groups in early roll-out of services Promote open standards in the satellite industry Develop the key satellite and ground system technology in order to lessen the service deployment risk

How ARTES 3 helps to companies to develop a good multimedia business case Co-financed R&D accelerates projects start-up and has a significant multiplication effect on the return on investments “ESA seal of approval” on the technology eases raising of private financing promoting applications and new standards accelerates market penetration of new systems

ARTES 3 Funding Activities are co-funded by ESA and contractors on a 50 % basis. Special cases are: Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) funded up to 75%. University, institutes and equivalent research centres funded up to 100%. Companies have an obligation to present a business plan with their offer to ESA Credibility of business plan is a key evaluation criteria

The ARTES 3 Multimedia Programme A programme based on innovative approach such as industry driven initiatives and co-funding of development costs. Based on three lines of actions: Line 1: Applications and value added services Line 2: Satellite Multimedia Products. Line 3: end-to-end systems

Line 1 : Applications and value added services development of applications in partnership with telecom operators to promote early market start up: tele-medicine tele-education public administration Intranets high speed Internet

Line 1 : Applications and value added services developments of standards Open standards are essential for the market to develop and for systems to be interoperable ESA has created an ad-hoc group with Eutelsat, Hispasat, Intelsat, SES-Astra, Telenor, Telesat, Teracom which has elaborated a recommendatuin for a standard for multimedia interactive terminals

Line 2: satellite multimedia products System building blocks being developed: onboard processing technology (e.g. Skyplex plus), intelligent antennas, inter-satellite links communications controllers

Ground systems: Geo and Non-geo low cost user terminals (Ku and Ka systems) Gateways (ATM/IP) Communication software Line 2: satellite multimedia products

Line3: end-to-end Systems Partnership with the main European multimedia systems: Euroskyway, Skybridge and West. Development of end-to-end technology demonstrators and system validation initiatives with an initial investment of 45 MECU
