2 Current Situation Parts of Northampton can receive 50mb/s 12% of Northants only able to receive under 2mb/s (based on line survey) –8% under 1mb/s Majority of the <2mb/s premises are in rural areas –Often served by long copper lines off cabinets or direct from exchanges.

3 How fast are different broadband services

4 BT investing £2.5bn to deliver superfast broadband infrastructure upgrades to 2/3rds of the UK by 2015. Delivered by Fibre Optics lines replacing copper lines at least to street cabinets. Broadband Upgrade Commercial Roll Out

7 Fast Broadband Benefits Tele-Health Northamptonshire Integrated Care Partnership Telehealth a Key outcome for the 5 year plan County already a lead in “safe at home” project – social care – remote monitoring allows people to live in their home for longer NHS – rolling out telemedicine – e.g. At home diabetes, blood pressure checking

8 Fast Broadband Benefits Education Good broadband for Schools essential Virtual Learning Environment –Only truly beneficial if all pupils have good broadband at home University looking to put most of its modules online

9 Fast Broadband Benefits Business Telecoms now 3 rd most important factor in locating business – now above transport links Proven productivity improves with better broadband Massive opportunities to utilise cloud computing and services Broadband in rural areas to allow innovation and expansion Increasingly important for agriculture

10 Final third identified as “market failure” and unlikely to be delivered commercially. £530 million to 2015 £300 million 2015-17 to support roll out to “final third” Final Third generally Market 1 exchanges i.e. Non competitive areas Where currently only BT supply Predominantly rural areas and small market towns – Northamptonshire covers approx. 20% of premises BDUK requesting County level bids for funding. Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) Funding

12 2/3 rd Premises will have access to 40mb/s broadband products by 2014 9 out of 10 premises have access to 40mb/s broadband products by 2015 2015 all premises have access to above national minimum broadband speeds (set at 2mb/s at least in peaks, were aiming for 10mb/s) 2020 all premises access of broadband up to 100mb/s Superfast Northamptonshire Minimum Standards

13 Main aims: Reliability, Sustainability and Affordability (to the end user). County already working with industry to encourage quicker roll out of SF broadband. Submitted bid to BDUK for funding: Now in discussions with BDUK to agree plan and allocation of BDUK funding. With BDUK funding the County Council will find a private sector partner to co-invest. Optimum technology mix will be decided through competitive tender process. The Superfast Northamptonshire Bid

14 Technology Expect the majority to be FTTC and FTTP Some areas other options will be more attractive such as:- Wireless or local Wimax Also consideration of Mobile 4G as this is rolled out

15 Satellite – current “everywhere” technology New Tooway service launched this Month, also Avanti. 6 – 10mb/s from £25 a month. £300 set up and installation Can also replace Sky receiver and receive Sky or Freesat, broadband and VOIP through one dish. They suggest you can also get rid of landline, not required for internet, you can use VOIP and combine with Mobile
