The International Astronomical Union (IAU) recognizes the potential of astronomy to contribute to education and creating a better world. To fulfill this potential, however, astronomy must be accessible to everyone, regardless of background, learning styles or ability. By becoming fully inclusive, the field of astronomy can help ensure that everyone interested has access to information and technological resources, and can become involved in astronomy if they set their minds to it. Astro-Sense was established a year ago under the IAU OAD as a volunteer initiative to enable space science to broaden its participation of people with different learning styles and to bring completely new perspectives to the space science research enterprise. Developing data analysis techniques and learning strategies that will enable them to perform science at the same level as typical peers will enrich the STEM workforce. This initiative will build partnerships to leverage the work of other groups seeking to promote data analysis literacy. South African Astronomical Observatory teaching workshops. These workshops will develop a training treatment to adapt the science teaching curricula in order to engage every learner and elicit a more fun and relevant learning experience. This work in progress will allow the students to acquire the necessary skills to perform at the same level as the traditional learners at all education levels ( Kindergarten to University level). Access to Information: Using multimodal display of observational data. Multimodal display, e.g. sound as an adjunct to visualization, has proven to increase sensitivity to events contained in noisy data. It allows the detection of ambiguous gradients or subtle changes in numerical patterns in data that cannot be easily detected by traditional techniques. This novel technique [1] has allowed us to study phenomena such gamma and x-ray emissions from stars that are violently changing and the production of highly charged particles in the surface and corona of the Sun. Richer verbal descriptors: For an auditory-oriented person, working on theoretical physics and astrophysics tasks is mostly done orally. Graphics and tables are mostly described orally. The low quality 3D printing currently available does not convey to some sensory-deprived learners all the information embedded in astronomy images. To level the playing field at every academic level, we will design new perceptual meta-data formats that will make observational and bibliographic data more accessible. This will be achieved through the development and, if necessary, a systematization of richer verbal and perceptual descriptors to convey space science information, inluding equations, charts, and mathematical operators. These descriptors may be of use in outreach to the general public and will enrich the experience of both audiences. A sense of the night sky: Graduate students are working on providing the auditory-learners a sense of apparent distance and a sense of the night sky. They experiment with 3D sound to convey the parameters of apparent brightness and apparent angular distance that correspond to stars and constellations. The radio units have different applications. The design and operation can be integrated into the student learning experience in electromagnetism, electromagnetic wave propagation and transmission. In particular, students and researchers will understand the processes that cause ionospheric disturbances and will study their effects on the Global Navigation Satellite System in conjunction with the Global Positioning System (GPS), the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and GOES geostationary satellite. Late Onset Disabilities: Astronomers that develop late onset disabilities leading to sensory deprivation, presumably have successful careers and therefore must be retrained to use technological accommodations that would allow them to remain in their jobs. We will develop technological trainings for astronomers and astrophysicists who were relying on highly developed visual expertise at the time their sight was lost.
