1 Overview of Computational Science Education Materials
Puerto Rico Workshops Overview of Computational Science Education Materials

2 Why Computational Science?
How science and engineering is done Models allow insights when systems are too large, too small, or too complex to fully understand through experimentation Reduces time to solution for many types of research and design Facilitates research that could not be done in any other way

3 Computational Science Skills
Computational science provides skills needed in the present and future workforce Understanding of modeling techniques that are used in research and business Analytical skills Teamwork skills Communications skills Inquiry-based education approach engages students in learning

4 Benefits to Students Inquiry-based learning is more effective than traditional lecture oriented instruction Students are actively engaged in the learning process Students gain deeper insights and have higher retention rates for the information Facilitates the integration of information across academic disciplines – math, science, engineering, computer science

5 Goals for the Session Demonstrate the pedagogy for computational science education Introduce materials and models that can be incorporated for classroom use Introduce simple tools that can be used to build and demonstrate modeling techniques Review XSEDE resources for education

6 Developing Faculty Expertise
Faculty professional development workshops Two to six day workshops on a variety of topics Computational thinking Computational science education in science and engineering domains Focus on local/regional audiences to reduce travel costs Subsidies for faculty to travel to workshops at other sites We also have programs to enhance faculty expertise.

7 Special Workshops for Faculty and Students
Development of synchronous and asynchronous education and training sessions Multi-site broadcasts of workshops Training and education modules (See Experimenting with full courses that can be widely shared for credit and non-credit inclusion in curricula (e.g.

8 Getting Started Handouts have a list of sites and datasets I will be using
