The Consonants The English alphabet has 21 consonants B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z The 24 English sounds are written like this /b, d, f, g, h, dZ, k, l, m, n, p, r, s, t, v, w, j, z, S, Z, tS, T, D, N/

The Consonants Only 16 IPA consonant phonemes match the English alphabet There are no symbols for c, q, x, and y The /j / phoneme = consonant ‘Y’ Why? ‘C’ makes many different sounds ‘Q’ and ‘X’ consist of two sounds ‘Y’ is both a vowel and consonant
