3. A bit of technical vocabulary…
Phoneme – spoken sounds – there are about 44 in the English language. Grapheme – how we write each of the spoken sounds e.g the spoken sounds ‘f’ is written using the graphemes f, ff, ph. Red words – words that cannot be sounded out e.g. I, said, was. Green words – words that can be sounded out using our phonics. Fred talk – (Fred is the frog) he can only talk in sounds e.g. sh-o-p.

Children should be encouraged to identify the parts of a word which are phonetically regular and identify the parts of the word which are ‘tricky’ (cannot be sounded out).

13. Comprehension
Children need to be able to understand the text they have read. To encourage this, we ask children lots of questions about the text.
What is that character thinking?
What do you think
Will happen next?
What is happening?
Why do you think the
character is feeling
like this?
What is the character saying?

14. What do these words mean?
Phoneme
The smallest single identifiable sound, e.g. the letters 'sh' represent just one sound, but 'sp' represents two (/s/ and /p/).
Grapheme
A letter or a group of letters representing one sound, e.g. t, l, sh, ch, igh. This is the way we write the sound.
Green Words
Children can ‘Fred Talk’ (sound out) these words.
Tricky words
Irregular words with different sounds. Cannot be sounded out.
Segment
Reading/writing each individual sound. Means the same as ‘sound out’ and ‘Fred Talk’. To segment the word cat we say c-a-t.
Blend
Ability to say phonemes (sounds) together c-a-t = cat.
Digraph
Two letters making one sound. E.g. th, ng, ow.
Trigraph
Three letters making one sound. E.g. air, igh.
Split Digraph
Two letters, split, making one sound. E.g. a_e = cake or i_e in slide.
CVC
Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. E.g. cat, dog, lot.
CCVC
Consonant-Consonant-Vowel-Consonant. E.g. frog, chop, slam.
