North America

Managing resources Modern life poses a threat to the abundant natural resources in the United States. Conservation efforts by citizens and from all levels of government have increased to ensure resources will continue to flourish in the future.

Managing resources Resource management: understanding and respecting the balances that exist in natural ecosystems. Efforts to reverse the damage have begun but more is needed to achieve sustainable levels.

Impact Consequences of human Pollution: Acid Rain Smog Eutrophication- which encourages the excessive algae growth that depletes water’s oxygen and suffocates fish. Water shortage- Crop and livestock losses

Acid Rain:

Smog:

eutrophication

Amimas River:

2010 BP oil spill:

How is the USA trying to help? Clean-air practices Searching for renewable energy Reducing waste

Federal Government Clean Water Act Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) Working with companies: encouraging the use of renewable energy sources offering incentives for companies to limit emissions

Managing Resources Canada’s many natural resources have suffered due to: fishing Logging mineral and oil and gas extraction.

Managing resources Calls for federal protection and greater conservation efforts have increased to protect existing resources and to develop renewable ones rare ecosystems such as the boreal forest could be destroyed

impact Acid Rain- Contaminating lakes, streams and rivers. Pollution- From the US can also affect Canada Industrial Pollution- Contaminating waterways Harming those who depend on them Canada and the United States are working on Improving water quality Fish Populations

Providences: The provinces individually take action to address climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Ontario’s Green Energy and Green Economy Act promotes green energy through conservation and financial incentives.

The government: Alternative energies, by the government: wind solar power. Initial reports are positive, but time is needed to see which methods of alternative energy will be successful.

Everyday things: Running water Leaving the light on Name different ways you impact the environment?

What can you do? What different things can you do to help the impact on the environment?
