Location: Rockler Headquarters, Medina, MNRTUs: 1 Founded in 1954, Rockler Woodworking & Hardware is a specialty store dedicated to bringing woodworking enthusiasts the latest in woodworking technologies while sustaining the natural resources that make woodworking possible. It was no surprise that they showcased the same level of commitment to bringing the latest in sustainable technology to their Medina, Minnesota headquarters while providing the best working environment for their employees. Facility Manager, Rick White, had two main challenges. First, employees working in their call center and art department frequently reported thermal discomfort. Occupants of the call center and art department are served by a single RTU with four simple zone dampers. The existing zoning system is inadequate for the wide ranges in load, driving discomfort for employees in these two departments. The second challenge was energy waste. The existing zoning system requires a bypass damper. However, bypass dampers waste as much as 26% energy according to a 2013 study conducted by the California Utilities Statewide Codes and Standards Team. Rick was looking for a solution that would solve employee comfort issues without increasing their energy bill. My relationship with 75F is a highly profitable one and I really enjoy the experience! - TODD SHUMAN, MIDLAND HEATING OWNER OUTSIDE AIR OPTIMIZER 75F offers demand control ventilation (DCV) and enthalpy economizer solutions, which are strategies that optimize the use of outside air. Unlike other solutions in the market, we use live data feeds to measure outside enthalpy and sensors in your store to calculate indoor enthalpy. With an understanding of both, we are able to provide superior free cooling when the conditions are right, while ensuring optimal air quality for employees. BUILDING STATISTICS Rockler Woodworking & Hardware 75F ends office thermostat wars and saves energy at Medina headquarters THE CHALLENGE 75F SOLUTION 75F installed the Dynamic Airflow Balancing solution coupled with our Outside Air Optimizer (OAO) suite of products in order to deliver a balanced thermal environment while maximizing energy savings. DYNAMIC AIRFLOW BALANCING 75F installed 6 Wireless Room Modules and 12 smart dampers throughout the building. The sensors take a snapshot every minute of the internet-connected devices to build a vast empirical model that informs the smart algorithm in the cloud. These smart algorithms wirelessly transmit data back to the smart dampers, proactively adjusting throughout the day to regulate temperatures. All of these wireless devices are controlled by a Central Control Unit. Rockler Headquarters | Page 1 Figure 1. Instant insights with Facilisight online portal

DELIVERING MORE THAN JUST TEMPERATURE Within 24 hours of installing the 75F system, employees reported a noticeable difference. The building was being conditioned without human intervention with the predictive power of the 75F proprietary algorithms. Facilisight, a suite of web and mobile apps, confirms employee reports of increased comfort. Figure 1 on page 1 provides a snapshot view of the heat map of first level where Customer Service is located and second level where the Art department resides. Each colored box represents an area where a remote temperature sensor was installed. All green boxes signifies that all zones are within the desired temperature range. There are no hot or cold spots on either floor and temperatures are even at within 2 degrees of the desired temperature. Rockler Headquarters | Page 2 PROVEN ENERGY SAVINGS Not only are employees more comfortable, Rockler is able to save energy in the process. They have not had to sacrifice one or the other. Figure 2 demonstrates the 75F OAO solution in action. When conditions are appropriate outside cool air is utilized to offer free cooling in areas that need it. Similarly, when conditions demand it (based on CO2 levels) fresh air is brought in to create a comfortable environment. Alternatively, if the air is too cold outside and CO2 levels are appropriate inside, our dampers can close 100% to prevent loss of energy from having to heat up the air to appropriate desired temperature. Figure 2 showcases how Facilisight can provide a quick snapshot of their energy usage as well as savings. The pie chart displays energy usage during occupied hours – cooling, heating and fan only. The statistics to the right of the pie chart provides an instant look into how much energy they are saving when free cooling is employed (kWh) or when OAO closes the damper to prevent air that is too cold from coming in (BTUs). The terrain graph at the bottom provides a view into how they are using energy (including free cooling) by plotting run time, date and hour of the day. Both Rockler facility managers and employees are enjoying how the solution drives efficiency while maximizing comfort. Figure 2. Overview of System Performance Figure 3. Energy insights from Facilisight online app All light blue areas indicate when the system is using fresh air and free cooling for the building.
