Turn to your Venn Diagram in your writer’s notebook comparing and contrasting Okonkwo and his father. Compose a thesis statement for a paragraph that connects Okonkwo’s character traits to his father’s influence. Find specific details (one or more direct quotations) as textual support. Write an analytical paragraph answering the prompt. You MUST cite your textual evidence in the following manner: EX: Okonkwo, exactly the opposite of his father in every way that matters, strives to rise in his Ibo community and reminds his friends “of the title [he] intend[s] to take shortly” (Achebe 7).

Please put your phones away and attentively follow along as we are reading the novel. Chapter 3 begins 26:32. As we read/listen, make notes in your Writer’s Notebooks of the following: words describing Okonkwo’s feelings and fears, the stated or implied reasons for those fears, and the effect they seem to have on them. Be sure to write the PAGE NUMBER as you do so. After we finish reading, you will work with a partner to create a Double Entry Journal in your Writer’s Notebooks. This will be an ongoing activity so leave several pages for this. You will continue this process while reading the entire novel. You should find as many quotes as possible; be sure to write a personal response or interpretation for each one.

Okonkwo’s Feelings & Fears: Passages from the Text Personal Response or Interpretation “But his whole life was dominated by fear, I wonder why Okonkwo is so afraid. How the fear of failure and of weakness” (Achebe could he be a successful wrestler if he is so 13). dominated by fear?

In groups of three or four, reread the passage that describes Okonkwo’s compound. Sketch his compound, labeling the major areas. Use quoted textual evidence to support your drawing. Explain your sketch to the class.

In the first four chapters of Things Fall Apart, Achebe presents Okonkwo as a man of high status in his village. Fill in the chart on the handout with details from those chapters, and compare Okonkwo’s achievements and status to the traits and actions that sometimes contradict his nobility. You may work with a partner if you wish to do so, but both must turn in a separate document.
