Environmental Management Undergraduate Internship Summer 2015 ANL Lead: Lisa Reed Argonne National Laboratory is seeking highly motivated and energetic undergraduate students interested in an environmental management summer internship. This new program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM), provides students from minority serving institutions an opportunity to conduct research with a focus on environmental management and cleanup. This 10-week paid summer research experience balances time between engagement with relevant research activities, content driven seminars, laboratory tours showcasing cutting-edge science and technology, career development activities and social events. DOE - Visiting Faculty Program Summer 2015 Placement ANL Lead: Meridith Bruozas/Lisa Reed Amber Wise, Co-PI: Margaret MacDonell EVS Project Title: GreenChem-Risk 4Sustainability Project Description: This project will illustrate how green chemistry principles and risk assessment methods can be combined to facilitate sustainability planning, with an emphasis on energy-related processes and systems. A key goal is to expand the range of options that are considered when evaluating proposed modifications to existing systems or planning new facilities, operations, policies, or programs. Practical case studies will be used to explore how green chemistry principles and risk cumulative risk assessment (CRA) methods can be applied to help identify alternatives to existing toxic, energy- inefficient, or otherwise wasteful processes. The CRA approach provides a framework for considering multiple stressors, sources, and effects associated with real-world conditions (rather than the more limited, classical assessment approach that focused on a single chemical). The case studies developed for this project will be used to identify key issues and best practices, which will in turn be used to outline guidelines for incorporating green chemistry and risk assessment elements into sustainability planning. In addition, this project will develop a set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) to illustrate how local community concerns can be incorporated. The project will also consider how citizen science initiatives could potentially help increase the understanding of local conditions, toward suggesting key issues/areas that could be addressed by sustainability plans. The guidelines and FAQs developed for this project are designed to help researchers, practitioners, policy makers, decision makers, and the public pursue innovative options that promote sustainable and healthy communities. 3

Projects Just Getting Off the Ground STEM Mentoring Café On Saturday, May 16 th, 37 STEM professionals will participate in a 2- hour mentoring session with late elementary and middle school urban youth. STEM professionals come from ANL, FNAL and other DOE/Government agencies. Laboratory to Market Fellowship Program Currently exploring opportunities with DOE for 8 internship experiences focused on developing the next generation of ‘tech transfer’ professionals. 7
