Earth Materials Lab Explanation

Why did water take so long to heat? Water has an important property. It takes five time more heat energy to raise an amount of water one degree than it takes to raise the temperature of an equal amount of dry soil or sand one degree.

How did the energy get from the light bulb to the sand, soil, water, and air? Radiant Energy or Radiation! Radiant energy travels as waves through space and through air. This is what heated the materials and what heats earth!!!

Directions: Answer each question individually using your experiences from the lab. Please write a short paragraph for each response. Talk about and include your experiences from the lab. Explain the process so that your reader could understand your response if they were not lucky enough to be present for our lab. If each earth material received the same amount of solar energy, how can you explain the differences in temperature? The light bulb (which plays the role of the sun) heated the earth materials we put in the containers. How did it do that? How did the energy get from the Sun to the sand, soil, water, and air?
