13 Soil surfaces heat up and cool down faster than water surfaces because they are generally rougher, darker, and are not transparent so just the surface heats up. This means they have a lower specific heat than water.

18 The Greenhouse Effect

19 The Greenhouse Effect takes place when short-length, high energy waves enter the earth’s atmosphere. The waves of energy strike the earth’s surface and give off some of their energy. Now there are longer-length, less energetic waves inside the Earth’s atmosphere. These longer-length, less energetic waves cannot make it back out of the earth’s atmosphere causing it to warm up.

24 The time of year when there is the greatest insolation from the sun does not match the point of greatest temperature on the earth. During the spring, as the insolation increases, the earth’s temperature will also increase until June 21st when the northern hemisphere receives its greatest insolation. From that day onward the amount of insolation is decreasing yet, surprisingly, the temperature of the earth keeps rising. The earth’s temperature keeps rising for about a month or so. This occurs because even though the insolation is dropping there is still a greater amount of energy entering the earth’s atmosphere than the energy held onto by the earth. Therefore, the earth continues to gain temperature until a radiative balance occurs: equal energy entering and leaving.

During the fall, as the insolation decreases, the earth’s temperature will also decrease until December 21st when the northern hemisphere receives its least insolation. From that day onward the amount of insolation is increasing yet, surprisingly, the temperature of the earth keeps falling. The earth’s temperature keeps falling for about a month or so. This occurs because even though the insolation is increasing there is still a lower amount of energy entering the earth’s atmosphere than the energy held onto by the earth. Therefore, the earth continues to lose temperature until a radiative balance occurs: equal energy entering and leaving.
