1 Unit 5 Earth’s Energy Budget

2 The main energy source for all things on Earth is the Sun.
Some of this energy is reflected back into space or absorbed in the atmosphere. The rest reaches Earth’s surface, and is then reflected or absorbed. Earth's Energy Budget

3 Earth's Energy Budget The amount of energy coming in from the Sun is approximately equal to the amount of energy being sent back out into space. If the amounts were to become unbalanced, our Earth could have a change in temperature.

4 Earth's Energy Budget Earth’s surface absorbs solar energy.
This energy heats the land and water. Some of the absorbed energy is then radiated back into the atmosphere.

5 Earth's Energy Budget Some energy that reaches the surface is reflected back into space.

6 Earth's Energy Budget Clouds, dust and gases in the atmosphere reflect light. Gases and particles absorb some energy.
