1 The Sun is the source of energy for the Earth.
Of all the incoming solar radiation (energy): 35% is reflected 65% is absorbed

2 Heat flows from HIGH to LOW.
Heat is energy that flows from an object with a higher temperature to an object with a lower temperature. Cooler Object Warmer Object Heat Energy Flow REMEMBER! Heat flows from HIGH to LOW.

3 Energy from the Sun reaches Earth and heats surfaces such as water, roads, and rocks.
Heat is then transferred through the atmosphere in three ways: radiation conduction convection

4 RADIATION Energy that is transferred in the form of rays or waves through space.

5 Energy that is transferred when molecules bump into one another.
CONDUCTION Energy that is transferred when molecules bump into one another. Heat transferred to the particles of the spoon from the pot and hot water. Molecules in warmer objects move faster than molecules in cooler objects.

6 CONVECTION Heat that is transferred through the movement of heated fluids (liquids and gases). Air cools denser denser sinks rises sinks less dense

7 Example of all three types of heat transfer

8 What happens after the Earth receives radiant energy from the sun.

9 HEAT TRANSFER Heat transfers in three ways- radiation, conduction, and convection. Heat flows from high to low. Molecules in warmer objects move faster than molecules in cooler objects. Hot less dense air rises and cold denser air sinks. Summary of main points
